How to Write Mythos

BY ALICE FONTANESI

Because I am currently drowning in worldbuilding for a story that took me over half a year to strangle, let’s talk about mythos.

A mythos is a culture’s myths, and it’s a pretty common trope in fantasy to have all myths be true. This trope is usually used for urban fantasy, but it can work for any genre, depending on the worldbuilding. But justifying how and why all myths are real is going to be a bit of a challenge. You’re going to have a bunch of sun gods running around, so is the sun a huge group project or something else? And researching and cultural appropriation might also get in the way.

Fernando A. Torres once said, “mirrors are useless for reflecting who you are.” Marissa Meyer, the author of a bestselling science fiction book Cinder, clearly uses this important message in her story and in the rest of her series, the Lunar Chronicles. Cinder is about a 15-year-old cyborg that has the power to save her nation but is unsure how. The newest Spiderman movie, starring Tom Holland, was exclusively released in theaters on December 17th. This movie stars Zendaya as MJ and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. No Way Home is a continuation of the Tom Holland Spiderman movies – part of phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place after Avengers: Endgame. There were rumors about another possible appearance: Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, or Venom. From the post-credit scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, there was a hint of a connection between the two movies. In the scene, Venom attempts to show Eddie what he has experienced, but they end up transporting to be in the same world as Spiderman. This is right as the news is talking about Spiderman’s identity as Peter Parker.

Disclaimer: Spoilers to My Deepest Secret Seasons 2 and 3.

Most traditional heroes have fallen out of style now, and I’m pretty sure just about all of us have created really edgy characters at some point. Most of our heroes are flawed and troubled in many ways, and the traditionally heroic hero is not as popular. But creating actually realistic characters that we can relate to is much harder than it seems these days.
