Blue-Ringed Octopus

BY ALETHEA LO

STAFF WRITER

The blue-ringed octopus is made up of two main colors. Those two colors are yellow and blue. The blue-ringed octopus gets its name from the rings that spread across its whole body. Those rings only appear when they feel threatened. Most octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish are venomous, but the blue-ringed octopus is in a  different league of its own. Their venom is 1,000 times more deadly than cyanide.

Chapstick

BY BRIA KOEPKE
STAFF WRITER

Have you ever wondered why your lips are so excruciatingly dry? Well, let me inform you why. A lot of chapstick companies purposefully will make their chapstick to dry out the buyers lips. The whole point of buying chapstick is to fix the dryness and the dryer your lips are the more chapstick you’re going to buy. The companies are well aware, and of course they take advantage of this by manufacturing the chapstick to stop your body from being able to heal itself which can then lead to having health issues. The ingredients that are found in the chapstick actually pull out the moisture in your lips and sometimes leaves them dryer than what they started as.

The Importance of Sea Turtles

BY KAMEIL BHOLA AND BRIANNA KOEPKE

STAFF WRITERS

There are seven species of turtles in the world, 6 of them are threatened or endangered, this is extremely troubling because sea turtles are keystone species vital to marine and beach ecosystems. They help keep the jellyfish population in check, keep coral reefs healthy by preventing sponges from outcompeting corals, provide habitat for an array of “aquatic hitchhikers,” but most importantly keep the seagrass beds in check. Sea turtles help “mow ” seagrass; the grass needs to stay short because it’s a breeding and developmental ground for many species of fish, without it many marine animals would die out. If sea turtles were to all die out the sea grass would become too long, making it unsuitable for breeding/development, and if one part of the ecosystem fails, the rest will soon follow, leading to a full collapse.

Plot Armor

BY NOAH FONTANESI

STAFF WRITER

Plot armor is a pretty known trope and frequently used, but it seems to be only talked about in a negative sense. It comes up sometimes when talking about a story, but if it’s used poorly then we notice it. After all, why would such an obvious trope be liked? You’re pulled out of the story, it feels muddled, and it messes with the rules of the world. Why would anyone like plot armor? Well, tropes only become bad when used incorrectly and poorly, and it also applies to plot armor.

If you have been paying attention to social media for the past couple of months, you would know that the internet has recently become obsessed with a new game, Wordle. The objective is simple: figure out what the five letter word is in six guesses or less. Using the different clues, players need to identify the new word that refreshes every 24 hours.

How to Write Mythos

BY ALICE FONTANESI

STAFF WRITER

Because I am currently drowning in worldbuilding for a story that took me over half a year to strangle, let’s talk about mythos.

A mythos is a culture’s myths, and it’s a pretty common trope in fantasy to have all myths be true. This trope is usually used for urban fantasy, but it can work for any genre, depending on the worldbuilding. But justifying how and why all myths are real is going to be a bit of a challenge. You’re going to have a bunch of sun gods running around, so is the sun a huge group project or something else? And researching and cultural appropriation might also get in the way.
