Geometry Dash: A Review

Howdy to all of you wonderful people! I am once again your host Logan, and welcome to another great game review. Well, great is an opinion I guess. You get to judge if you perceive this article as great or not! Anyways, today I will be talking about a game that is near and dear to my heart. I’m sure you all have at least played this game at some point in your life. Whether it be on a friend’s phone or an overkill computer. This game has caused rage in many of us, often causing “rage quits” and “chucking your controller across the room”. The game in question is of course, Geometry Dash. With that being said, let’s get into it!

Now the gameplay of Geometry Dash is very straightforward; just jump through a series of obstacles. Which means this game only uses one button to control the entire game. Making this game incredibly easy to learn, but extremely hard to master. This game is also considered a “rhythm game”. A rhythm game can be qualified by any game that challenges a player’s sense of rhythm. They will always have some sort of music playing in the background for the player to match movements to. Now, this rhythm game has a reputation for being frustrating as ever. From people throwing their phones across the room; to people quitting the game swearing “I’ll never play this again!”

I feel as though I ended up talking about the frustrating part a bit too much. So let me talk about the good parts. Half of the reason that people flock to this game is not because of it’s gameplay. It’s more focused on the music. Now, the original sound track (OST) for this game is absolutely phenomenal. It gives just the right amount of adrenaline to push you to try to beat a level “one last time.” Geometry Dash comes with 21 OSTs, and 21 original levels with their own individual designs. Now, this may sound like a small amount, but believe me it will take you countless hours to get through maybe 10% of them. This is because this game focuses on teaching you the ropes through the process of trial and error. If you screw up just once, you have to start from the beginning. Which really motivates you to keep going! I also realized I never really talked about the actual level design. Geometry Dash is a side-scrolling 2D game. So you basically have to keep up with the game. The most integral part of this game though, is the implementation of user made levels. Giving this game infinite replayability!

As you can see, this is truly one of my favorite games. Even though I might rage-quit after trying and trying to beat a hard level; I can’t help but come back to it. Maybe it’s the music, maybe it’s the gameplay, or maybe I just really enjoy feeling the pain of having to start over again. Overall, if rhythm games are your thing, or you just want to check out this game, I recommend that you do. It’s only four dollars for constant hours of fun. Thank you for reading!
