Biden, Gun Control, and Executive Orders

Following a mass shooting in Indianapolis that killed eight people, Biden signed into action new executive orders on gun control. These orders included actions such as calling for a review of ghost guns, making it easier for states to implement red flag laws, and providing funds for community intervention programs. Biden also appointed David Chipman to be the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Biden’s executive orders are targeted at smaller issues that contribute to the bigger problem of gun violence. However, in order to really work towards a drastic reduction in gun violence, we need legislative measures. Consequently, Biden needs congressional support to make any significant changes. Currently, there is not enough congressional support especially since Republicans are open supporters of the NRA.

Instead of accommodating to the safety rules, the NRA tweeted “Biden announced multiple extreme gun control actions. These actions could require law-abiding citizens to surrender lawful property, and push states to expand gun confiscation orders. Biden also nominated a gun control lobbyist to head [the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives]. NRA is ready to fight.”

Although Biden’s proposal is controversial among gun owners, nobody can deny the fact that something needs to be done as each day we see more and more mass shootings. These proposed laws may not pass, but they are a big step forward in ensuring the safety of this country.
