On December 1, 2020, Elliot Page posted on their Instagram with an announcement. “My friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot,” they said in the letter. Elliot Page is most known for his role as Vanya in The Umbrella Academy, the popular Netflix show, and his role as Juno MacGuff in the movie Juno.

Their wife, Emma Portner, expressed her support of Page. “I am so proud of @elliotpage,” she wrote. “Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world…Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.” His co-stars from Umbrella Academy were happy for him as well, with Justin H. Min tweeting, “welcome to the fam, Elliot.” Moreover, Netflix has already changed the credits on their past films to remove his deadname, and they’ve also confirmed that Page will continue to play the character Vanya Hargreeves.

“I love that I am trans,” Elliot Page says at the end of his announcement,  “And I love that I am queer…To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.” Already, Page has gotten tons of support from his fans, and they’re paving the way for more LGBTQ+ inclusion in the film industry.
